Background of Kalihati upazila

According to the written opinion of Dr. Ashraf Siddiqui, a writer of Kriti Son of Kalihati Upazila, the word Fort-e-Hati is degenerate kalihati. During the Pathan rule, an army cantonment was installed at the old police station on the banks of the River Prakash Fatikjani. There were horses and hands for the use of soldiers. Therefore, this army cantone came to be known as the fort of the hati or the fort-e-hati. This word eventually becomes the name of this place in Kalihati. Another opinion is that of former bodha people living in Kalihati Sadar. They said the present large Kali temple at Kalihati Sadar was located on the banks of the neighbouring river. The adjacent weekly big Hamidpur Haat was known as Kali's Haat hundreds of years ago. The name of the place is Kalihati. Kalihati was finally converted into Kalihati which is currently written in Kalihati spelling. The Kalhati police station was administratively formed in 1928 and converted into upazila in 1983.
